The project

A hall with a new purpose, and no warmth to match it

The village hall in Lytchett had been taken over by a charity with a plan: transform it into a youth club for the local community. A building that young people are meant to spend their evenings in needs heating that actually works — reliably, and without eating the charity's funds.

Village halls are among the hardest buildings to heat well. They are big, open rooms that stand empty for most of the week and then fill for a few hours at a time — a youth club evening, a weekend booking, a committee meeting. Heating a building like that continuously wastes money warming empty space; not heating it means every session starts in the cold. And the people making the decision are almost never spending their own money: a hall runs on hire fees, grants and fundraising, so every pound that goes into heat is a pound that came from someone's effort.

That occupancy pattern is exactly what per-room electric heating is built for. Each radiator has its own thermostat and its own schedule, so the building can heat the rooms that are actually in use, when they are in use, and nothing else — warm for the hours the club runs, off for the hours it doesn't. There is no boiler to maintain, no plant room, and no single point of failure that closes the whole building.

The enabling work

First the wiring, then the warmth

Twelve radiators is a real electrical load, and an older hall's installation was never designed with electric heating in mind. Before new heating can go in, the building's electrical system has to be able to carry it safely — the supply, the distribution board and the circuits the radiators will run on.

That is what "enabling work" means on a job like this one: we upgraded the hall's electrical system so it could support the new heating properly, then installed the twelve radiators onto it. It is less visible than the radiators on the walls, and it is the part that makes them possible.
