Why a battery changes the maths

Without storage, solar generated at midday while the house is empty is exported for a fraction of what you pay to import in the evening. A battery keeps it. On a time-of-use tariff it can also charge overnight at the cheap rate and carry the house through the expensive hours — useful whether or not you have panels.

Battery sizing is a consumption question, not a roof question. We look at when you use power across the day before recommending a capacity.

What a battery actually does

A battery does one simple thing: it moves electricity through time. Solar generated at noon is kept for the evening; cheap overnight units are kept for the expensive peak. The battery itself saves nothing — the gap between the price you would have paid and the price you did pay is the saving. That is why the right capacity depends entirely on your consumption pattern and your tariff, and why we start there.

How the job runs

  1. Free home survey

    We visit, measure each room and look at how you actually live in the house. Heat output is sized per room — a guess made over the phone is how people end up cold in the room they use most.

  2. A written recommendation

    You get a clear proposal setting out what we would install, why that specification, and what it costs. No pressure and no obligation to go ahead.

  3. Removal and disposal

    Removal and disposal of old storage heaters, convector heaters, boilers and cylinders is part of the job, and we make good afterwards.

  4. Installation and handover

    We install, test and then show you how to run it. Getting the controls right is most of the saving, so we do not leave until you know how to use them.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need solar panels for a battery to make sense?
No. On a time-of-use tariff a battery can charge overnight at the cheap rate and run the house through the expensive hours — useful whether or not you have panels. With panels, it additionally keeps generation you would otherwise export.
What size battery do I need?
It depends on when and how much electricity you use, not on the size of your roof. We look at your consumption across the day before recommending a capacity — an oversized battery is money sitting idle.
What can I replace my night storage heaters with?
Usually either modern electric radiators controlled room by room, or high heat retention storage heaters where your tariff still rewards off-peak charging. Which suits you depends on the tariff, the building and how you use the house — that is what the free survey establishes.
Which electric radiator is the most efficient?
Honestly, they are all essentially 100% efficient at the point of use — every unit of electricity becomes heat in the room. What varies between systems is control: whether you can heat only the rooms you are using, only when you are using them. That is where the saving comes from, not from any particular radiator.
Can I replace my gas boiler with electric heating?
Yes. We replace gas boilers and their radiator circuits with electric heating and hot water, which removes the flue, the gas connection and the annual gas safety inspection. Electricity costs more per unit than gas, so at survey we will be straight with you about running costs and about whether solar or battery storage changes the picture.
Do you remove and dispose of the old system?
Yes. Removal and disposal of old storage heaters, convector heaters, boilers and cylinders is part of the job, and we make good afterwards.
